A composer by training, Mark has written, produced and performed in a
wide range of styles over a period of roughly twenty-five years. His formal training includes
a bachelors degree in music from Clark University where he graduated with high honors in
music as well as a Master of Fine Arts degree in composition from the California Institute
of the Arts where he studied with Pulitzer Prize winner Mel Powell.
His compositions range from classical to jazz to world music, from solo instrumental pieces to
ballets to full orchestral works including a Concerto for Tabla and Orchestra premiered at the
California Institute of the Arts with John Bergamo as soloist.
Mark has been performing as a guitarist for roughly thirty years having played and studied
rock, jazz, classical and folk guitar. His outlook on the guitar changed radically a few years
ago when he heard Michael Hedges perform in San Francisco at what, tragically, turned out to
be Michael's last San Francisco performance. Since then, Mark has focused exclusively on 6
and 12-string acoustic guitar using original tunings, harmonics and percussive techniques in
the context of writing, recording and performing songs with Glass House.
